Airport Overview

Vienna International Airport (IATA: VIE, ICAO: LOWW), officially Flughafen Wien-Schwechat, is Austria's largest and busiest airport and the primary hub for Austrian Airlines — a member of the Lufthansa Group and Star Alliance. Located in the municipality of Schwechat, approximately 18 km southeast of Vienna's city centre (Stephansplatz), the airport serves as a strategically important gateway between Western and Central/Eastern Europe, capitalising on Vienna's geographic position at the crossroads of European civilisations.

In 2024, Vienna Airport handled approximately 31.5 million passengers, placing it among Europe's top 15 busiest airports and firmly establishing its role as the key hub for the Austrian, Central European, and Balkan aviation markets. The airport is owned and operated by Flughafen Wien AG (Vienna Airport), which is publicly listed and in which the Vienna and Lower Austria state governments each hold approximately 20% stakes, with the remaining shares publicly traded. A particularly distinctive feature of Vienna Airport is that it is served by the City Airport Train (CAT) — Austria's fastest dedicated airport rail link — and the Vienna U-Bahn's U3 extension, making it one of the most efficiently connected airports to a European capital city.

Austrian Airlines uses Vienna as its sole hub, operating an extensive network of over 130 destinations on 6 continents, with particular strength in Eastern Europe (Belgrade, Bucharest, Kyiv, Warsaw, Prague, Budapest), the Middle East, and North America (New York, Chicago, Washington, Toronto, Los Angeles). The carrier's fleet includes Airbus A320 family, A321, A350-900, and Boeing 777-200ER aircraft. Vienna is also the home base of Level (IAG Group's LCC), and serves as an important station for Wizz Air, Eurowings, and Ryanair.

The terminal campus consists of a central main terminal complex (Terminal 2, the primary building) and the adjacent Terminal 3 (opened 2012), connected by the Bridge — a glass-roofed indoor boulevard housing shops, restaurants, and transit services. The airport underwent significant expansion throughout the 2000s and 2010s, with Terminal 3's opening representing a €500 million investment that added capacity for 10 million additional passengers per year. A new runway (Runway 11R/29L) was the subject of a decade-long planning controversy before its approval and construction were finally abandoned in 2017 following environmental assessments. Current capacity discussions focus on optimising the two existing runways.

🎯 Quick Facts: The airport operates 24/7 with 2 active (Terminal 2 and Terminal 3, connected via 'The Bridge') main terminals, serves over approx. 200+, and is one of the busiest airports in the region, known for excellent connectivity and modern facilities.

Terminal 2 — Main Terminal

Terminal 2 is the original and central terminal building, substantially expanded and modernised in the 2000s. It houses all airline check-in areas, the main security checkpoint, and connects directly to both the CAT/S7 rail station and the Terminal 3 bridge connection. Check-in zones A–E are in T2; the terminal handles Austrian Airlines and the majority of legacy carriers.

  • Airlines: Austrian Airlines (primary hub carrier), Lufthansa, Swiss, Brussels Airlines, Air France, KLM, British Airways, Turkish Airlines, Aeroflot (suspended), LOT Polish, Finnair, SAS, SWISS, and most full-service carriers
  • Check-in: 154 counters; Austrian Business Class dedicated row (Check-in Zone B); automated bag-drop kiosks

Terminal 3 (opened 2012)

Terminal 3, opened in June 2012 at a cost of €500 million, is a modern glass-and-steel structure connected to T2 via The Bridge — a 300-metre glass-roofed indoor shopping and restaurant boulevard at the arrivals level. T3 added 10 million passengers of annual capacity and handles primarily LCC and leisure carriers.

  • Airlines: Wizz Air (focus city, large presence), Ryanair, easyJet, Eurowings, Level (IAG LCC), Vueling, Corendon, and leisure/charter operators
  • Gates: Own set of departure gates (G+ pier); aerobridges and remote stands
  • Lounges (T3):
    • Jet Lounge T3 — Priority Pass eligible; walk-in ~€35. Food, bar, showers.
  • The Bridge (connecting T2–T3): 300m of shopping (Swarovski, Zara, Douglas, Interspar supermarket), dining (Vapiano, Nordsee, traditional Viennese Würstelstand), and the CAT/S7 train station access. Open to all passengers and visitors without passing security.

Pier West & Pier East

Airside gates are spread across multiple piers extending from T2 and T3. Pier East (T2) handles long-haul and wide-body gates; Pier West (T2) handles medium-haul European. Gates are connected airside; no re-screening needed between piers. Allow 15–20 minutes to walk to far gates.

Transportation Guide

Getting to and from Vienna International Airport (VIE)

Vienna Airport is exceptionally well-connected to the city centre by a choice of four rail options and excellent motorway access. For most passengers, the CAT (City Airport Train) or S-Bahn represents the best balance of speed and cost.

CAT — City Airport Train (Premium)

The City Airport Train (CAT) is Austria's dedicated non-stop airport express, operating between Vienna Mitte/Landstraße station (central Vienna, on the U3/U4 metro lines) and Vienna Airport:

  • Journey time: 16 minutes non-stop — one of the fastest city-centre connections in Europe
  • From Vienna Mitte: connects directly to U3 (Erdberg, Simmering, Wien Mitte/Landstraße) and U4 (Karlsplatz, Schönbrunn, Hütteldorf)
  • Fare: €14.90 single (~€14.90); €24.90 return (~€24.90)
  • Frequency: Every 30 minutes; hourly before 07:00 and after 22:00
  • Operating hours: First departure from airport ~05:39; last from city ~23:33
  • City check-in: passengers can check in bags at Wien Mitte station the evening before departure (Austrian Airlines, select other carriers). Large luggage storage lockers at Wien Mitte.
  • Fully reservable seats; comfortable, quiet, reliable

S-Bahn S7 (Cheaper Alternative)

ÖBB's S7 suburban rail runs between the airport and Wien Mitte / Wien Praterstern / Wien Floridsdorf on the same tracks as the CAT but stops at multiple suburban stations:

  • Journey time: ~25–30 minutes to Wien Mitte; ~35 minutes to Praterstern
  • Fare: €4.20 single (~€4.20) with a standard Vienna single ticket; or covered by Wiener Linien day/week passes that include zone 100 (airport zone)
  • Frequency: Every 30 minutes (combined with CAT, gives a train every 15 minutes to Wien Mitte)
  • Operating hours: Roughly 05:00–00:30
  • Considerably cheaper than CAT; only 10–14 minutes slower. Recommended for budget travellers.

U-Bahn (Metro) Connection at Wien Mitte

Both CAT and S7 terminate at Wien Mitte/Landstraße, where passengers connect to:

  • U3: West to Stephansplatz (Dom/Rathaus), Mariahilfer Strasse, Westbahnhof
  • U4: Karlsplatz (Kunsthistorisches Museum, Opera), Schönbrunn, Hütteldorf
  • No surcharge on metro once you've paid the airport supplement

Long-Distance Train (ÖBB Railjet)

Vienna Airport has its own ÖBB mainline train station, allowing direct long-distance connections:

  • Direct Railjets to Linz (~1.5 hrs), Salzburg (~2.5 hrs), Innsbruck (~4 hrs), Graz (~2.5 hrs)
  • International: direct trains to Budapest (~2.5 hrs), Prague (~4 hrs)
  • Exceptional convenience for inter-city connections without going into Vienna centre

Bus — Vienna Airport Lines (VAL)

  • Line 1: Vienna Morzinplatz/Schwedenplatz (city centre): ~30 min; €8 single
  • Line 2: Vienna Westbahnhof: ~40 min; €8 single
  • Line 3: Vienna Südbahnhof/Hauptbahnhof: ~20–25 min; €8 single
  • Frequency: Every 30 minutes; 24-hour service on all lines
  • Tickets at airport bus counter or online. Night buses continue when rail services pause (midnight–05:00).
  • Comfortable coaches with luggage space — good option for those with heavy bags

Taxi

  • Official taxi rank outside arrivals (both T2 and T3 exits)
  • Standard metered fare to Vienna city centre: approximately €35–45 (~€35–45); 20–35 minutes off-peak
  • Fixed-rate transfers available through airport's official taxi association — approximately €36–40 to most central districts
  • Night surcharge applies (22:00–06:00 and Sundays/holidays): +20–25%

Ride-Sharing (Uber & Bolt)

  • Uber and Bolt operate at VIE; designated pickup zones outside arrivals in T2 and T3
  • UberX to Vienna city centre: ~€25–40; typically somewhat cheaper than metered taxis in off-peak

Car Rental

  • Avis, Hertz, Europcar, Budget, Sixt, Enterprise, Alamo: all in T2/T3 arrivals and car park
  • Access via A4 Ostautobahn motorway directly to Vienna city ring; A2 south for Graz and Slovenia

Frequently Asked Questions

The City Airport Train (CAT) is the fastest and most comfortable option — 16 minutes non-stop to Wien Mitte/Landstraße for €14.90 single. From Wien Mitte, connect to U3 (Stephansplatz, 3 min) or U4 (Karlsplatz/Opera, 4 min). For budget travellers, the S7 S-Bahn covers the same route in 25–30 minutes for just €4.20. Airport buses to Westbahnhof, Hauptbahnhof, and Schwedenplatz run every 30 minutes for €8.
Yes — free unlimited WiFi throughout T2, T3, and The Bridge shopping area under 'Vienna Airport WiFi'. No registration required, no time limit. Speeds typically 30–60 Mbps. Available pre- and post-security in all areas.
For Schengen European flights, 2 hours is standard. For non-Schengen international and long-haul flights, 2.5–3 hours is recommended — passport control queues for non-EU passengers departing can be lengthy on busy Austrian Airlines long-haul mornings (07:00–10:00). Austrian Airlines' dedicated Business Class check-in (Zone B, T2) and Fast Track security significantly speed up the process for premium passengers.
Austrian Airlines (Star Alliance) is the dominant carrier operating 130+ destinations. Major full-service airlines include Lufthansa, Swiss, British Airways, Air France, KLM, Turkish Airlines, LOT Polish, Singapore Airlines, and Finnair. LCC presence: Wizz Air (major focus city), Ryanair, easyJet, and Eurowings. Notable: Austrian's Eastern European network is unmatched — it offers more frequencies to Belgrade, Bucharest, Sofia, Tbilisi, and other regional cities than any other carrier.
Yes — this is one of Vienna Airport's best features. The airport has its own ÖBB mainline train station with direct Railjet services to Salzburg (~2.5 hrs), Linz (~1.5 hrs), Graz (~2.5 hrs), Innsbruck (~4 hrs), and internationally to Budapest (~2.5 hrs) and Prague (~4 hrs). This means visitors can fly into VIE and train directly to other Austrian or Central European cities without entering Vienna city centre at all.
Yes — the Jet Lounge in T2 and T3 accepts Priority Pass, Lounge Key, and DragonPass (free for cardholders) or walk-in at approximately €35. These are good options for Wizz Air, Ryanair, and easyJet passengers with lounge memberships. The Austrian Airlines Business Lounge is the premium option (restricted to eligible passengers) and is particularly notable for its excellent Austrian food and wine selection.
Manner wafers (the iconic pink-wrapped Viennese hazelnut wafers sold since 1898) are the quintessential Vienna souvenir — available everywhere in the airport at good prices. Also excellent: Austrian wines (Grüner Veltliner white, Zweigelt red — ask at the wine section for Wachau region wines), Mozartkugeln (Salzburg chocolate confectionery), Swarovski crystal, and Austrian Schnaps (Obstler, Marillenschnaps/apricot brandy). The Interspar supermarket on The Bridge has these products at local prices, often cheaper than duty-free.
Vienna Airport operates 24/7, and The Bridge area (connecting T2 and T3) is open throughout the night for passengers. Comfortable seating is available, but it's not designed for sleeping. Moxy Vienna Airport and NH Vienna Airport are directly connected to the terminal campus and are the most practical options for overnight stays. The Jet Lounge allows overnight access for Priority Pass holders. No dedicated sleep pods exist at VIE.
Bratislava (Slovak capital) is just 60 km from Vienna Airport — surprisingly close. FlixBus and RegioJet operate direct coaches approximately every 1–2 hours from the airport bus stops for €8–15 (~50–75 minutes). Taxis cost €60–80. This makes VIE a practical entry point for Slovakia as well as Austria, and Bratislava is a worthwhile half-day or overnight side-trip from Vienna.
Yes — this is Vienna's strategic speciality. Austrian Airlines offers more destinations in Central and Eastern Europe than any other carrier from a Western European hub, including Belgrade, Bucharest, Sofia, Zagreb, Sarajevo, Tirana, Skopje, Tbilisi, Yerevan, Baku, Almaty, Tashkent, and Minsk (subject to sanctions/restrictions). Vienna's geographic position makes it the most natural Western European hub for CEE travel. LOT Polish, Czech Airlines, and Wizz Air add further frequency on many of these routes.
The CAT is a dedicated non-stop airport express that covers the 18 km between Wien Mitte and the airport in just 16 minutes — one of Europe's fastest city-centre connections. At €14.90 single (€24.90 return), it's more expensive than the S7 (€4.20), which takes only 10–14 minutes longer. The CAT is worth it for passengers with a lot of luggage (more comfortable, quieter), those catching early flights where time is tight, or business travellers who want to check in bags at Wien Mitte the evening before departure. Budget travellers should use the S7.

Pro Tips for Vienna International Airport

At The Airport:
  • Landtmann's am Flughafen (T2 airside) is one of Europe's better airport café experiences — the same Café Landtmann that has served Vienna's intelligentsia and politicians since 1873 operates a proper airport outpost with Viennese Melange coffee, apple strudel, and Wiener Schnitzel. Slightly expensive (strudel ~€8, schnitzel ~€22) but genuinely Austrian and worth it before a long flight.
  • The Würstelstand on The Bridge offers a Käsekrainer (cheese-stuffed Vienna sausage) with mustard and a bread roll for around €4–5 — the most authentic cheap eat you can get at an airport. Viennese eat these standing up at any time of day; joining them briefly before departure is a lovely last-Vienna moment.
  • Austrian Airlines Business Lounge (T2 airside, multiple locations) serves genuinely excellent food by airline lounge standards — Viennese Schnitzel at lunch, Austrian wines, and the Melange coffee machine is notably good. Star Alliance Gold cardholders should use this lounge even when flying other Star carriers from VIE.
  • Gate F (T2, far end of Pier East) handles long-haul wide-body departures and is a long walk from security — 15–20 minutes. If your Austrian Airlines long-haul flight (New York, Tokyo, Bangkok, Chicago) departs from Gate F, head there promptly when boarding is called rather than lingering in the shopping area.
Before You Fly:
  • Take the S7 S-Bahn instead of the CAT if you're budget-conscious — €4.20 vs €14.90 for a journey that takes only 10–14 minutes longer. The S7 runs every 30 minutes on the same tracks, serves all the same central stations, and uses your standard Vienna public transport ticket. The saving per trip is €10.70 — significant for a family.
  • Use the CAT's city check-in service at Wien Mitte station the evening before departure if flying Austrian Airlines. Drop your bags at the dedicated check-in desk (open until approximately 22:00) and travel to the airport completely luggage-free the next morning. This is an extraordinary convenience that few travellers take advantage of.
  • The Interspar supermarket on The Bridge (connecting T2 and T3) is open from early morning and sells authentic Austrian products — Manner wafers, wines, Mozartkugeln, local cheeses — at supermarket (not duty-free) prices. It's often cheaper and more authentic than the duty-free for food souvenirs.
  • Vienna Airport's Railjet connections make it viable to fly into VIE and travel directly to Salzburg, Graz, or Budapest by train without entering Vienna city at all. Check ÖBB.at for direct airport station departures if your Austrian itinerary starts in another city.
Common Mistakes:
  • Paying €14.90 for the CAT without knowing the €4.20 S7 alternative. Many first-time visitors see the CAT advertised prominently and assume it's the only rail option. Both trains run from the same station (Wien Mitte) on the same tracks — the S7 is the budget option that most Vienna residents use.
  • Missing the direct train connections to other Austrian and CEE cities. Travellers connecting to Salzburg, Graz, or Budapest sometimes spend extra time in Vienna unnecessarily — there are direct ÖBB Railjet trains from the airport station. Check ÖBB.at for airport station departures rather than assuming you must transit Wien Hauptbahnhof.
  • Underestimating queue times at passport control (non-Schengen arrivals) during peak periods. Vienna handles significant traffic from Middle Eastern, Russian/CIS, and Asian routes — the non-EU passport control queue can be 30–60 minutes on heavy long-haul days. Factor this into onward train or hotel check-in timing.
