Paris Orly Airport (ORY)
Airport Overview
Paris Orly Airport (IATA: ORY, ICAO: LFPO), officially Aéroport de Paris-Orly, is Paris's second international airport and France's second-busiest airport overall. Located in the communes of Orly and Villeneuve-le-Roi in the Val-de-Marne and Essonne departments, it sits approximately 14 km south of the centre of Paris (Notre-Dame Cathedral) — significantly closer to the city than Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG), which lies 25 km to the north. Orly is operated by Groupe ADP (Aéroports de Paris), the same company that manages CDG, Le Bourget, and other Île-de-France airports.
In 2024, Orly handled approximately 33.5 million passengers, recovering strongly from the COVID-19 disruption and approaching its pre-pandemic record of 33.1 million (2019). The airport serves as the primary hub for Transavia France (Air France Group's LCC subsidiary) and an important base for easyJet, Vueling, Air Algérie, Royal Air Maroc, and Air France's domestic and North African operations. Orly has traditionally been France's dominant airport for domestic routes — particularly the high-frequency Paris–Toulouse, Paris–Nice, Paris–Marseille, and Paris–Bordeaux corridors — and for routes to the French overseas territories (Martinique, Guadeloupe, Réunion, French Guiana) and North Africa (Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia).
The airport has a rich history: it opened in 1932 as a military aerodrome, became Paris's primary civil airport in the 1950s and 1960s (predating CDG), and was the site of several historically significant moments, including Concorde's early operations and the 1961 air disaster that claimed 130 lives (devastating Atlanta's arts community). For decades Orly operated two separate terminal buildings — the curved Orly-Sud (south) and the elongated Orly-Ouest (west) — but these were replaced by a single, dramatically redesigned unified terminal: the new Terminal Orly, which opened in April 2024 following a major €1.8 billion reconstruction. This new terminal consolidates all operations under one roof with modern facilities, significantly improving passenger experience compared to the ageing previous structures.
Orly's location south of Paris makes it particularly convenient for passengers from the southern and southeastern suburbs, the Left Bank, and central Paris. The OrlyVal automated metro link connects it to the RER B (which reaches central Paris and CDG), and a direct tram/train connection to the Paris Metro is under active development as part of the Grand Paris Express infrastructure programme.

Terminal Orly — New Unified Terminal (2024)
The historic Orly-Sud and Orly-Ouest terminal buildings, which dated from the 1960s–1970s and had become increasingly congested and outdated, were demolished and replaced by the new Terminal Orly, which opened in April 2024. The €1.8 billion reconstruction project was one of the largest airport redevelopment projects in French history and was completed in phases over several years while operations continued. The new terminal is a single, connected building covering approximately 270,000 sq m, designed by the architecture firm ADP Ingénierie, with natural light, sustainable design features, and a significantly improved passenger flow.
- Structure: Four halls (Hall 1–4) within a single connected building; Halls 1–2 (south wing) and Halls 3–4 (north wing) correspond approximately to the former Orly-Sud and Orly-Ouest footprints
- Capacity: 40 million passengers per year (design)
- Metro Line 14: Station integrated at Level -1 (basement), connecting to central Paris

Transportation Guide
Getting to and from Paris Orly Airport (ORY)
Orly's proximity to central Paris (14 km) makes it more accessible than CDG for most central city locations. The main public transport options involve the OrlyVal automated metro connecting to RER B, plus buses and taxis. A major upgrade — the Grand Paris Express Line 14 extension directly to Orly — was inaugurated in June 2024, dramatically improving direct metro access.
Metro Line 14 (Grand Paris Express) — Direct to Orly
The extension of Paris Metro Line 14 to Orly Airport opened in June 2024, providing the first direct metro connection between central Paris and Orly without requiring a change:
- Orly Airport → Aéroport d'Orly station → Olympiades → Gare de Lyon → Châtelet-Les Halles → Saint-Lazare → Porte de Clichy
- Journey time: Orly to Gare de Lyon ~20 minutes; to Châtelet-Les Halles ~25 minutes; to Saint-Lazare ~30 minutes
- Frequency: Every 2–3 minutes at peak; every 4–5 minutes off-peak
- Operating hours: ~05:30–01:15 (Mon–Thu, Sun); 05:30–02:15 (Fri–Sat)
- Fare: Standard Paris zone fare — €2.15 single with Navigo Easy or Navigo pass; or included in multi-day Paris Visite passes. An ORY-specific supplement of €2.60 applies above zone 2 (total ~€4.75 to central Paris zones 1–2). Check RATP website for current ticketing.
- Station is directly integrated into the new Terminal Orly building (Level -1)
- Fully accessible (lifts, wide doors)
OrlyVal + RER B (older option, still running)
The traditional OrlyVal automated shuttle + RER B connection remains available as an alternative for passengers heading to northern Paris, CDG connection, or the Latin Quarter:
- OrlyVal from terminal to Antony station (~8 min); then RER B to Saint-Michel Notre-Dame (~20 min), Châtelet (~25 min), Gare du Nord (~35 min)
- Combined fare: approximately €12.10 (~€12.10) for OrlyVal + RER B to central Paris
- Useful for CDG connection (RER B runs direct to CDG T2 and T3)
- OrlyVal runs 06:00–23:15; frequency every 4–7 minutes
RER C (Pont de Rungis)
- Free shuttle bus (navette gratuite) from terminal to Pont de Rungis RER C station (~10 min bus + ~35 min train to central Paris)
- Fare: standard zone C ticket ~€4.50 (~€4.50)
- Less convenient than Line 14 for most destinations; useful for Left Bank destinations (Champ de Mars, Invalides)
Bus — Orlybus & RATP
- Orlybus (RATP line 183): Runs from airport to Denfert-Rochereau (Metro 4/6, RER B) in ~30 min; €10.30 single; every 15–20 min; 06:00–00:30
- Le Bus Direct line 1: Connects Orly to Montparnasse, Gare de Lyon, Gare de l'Est, and CDG; approximately €17 one-way, €26 return. Popular for passengers with luggage avoiding metro stairs.
- Night bus N22 (Noctilien): Serves Orly overnight (00:30–05:30) to central Paris; ~€2.15 with Navigo / €2.15 single

France's #2 airport (after CDG at ~67M in 2024). European ranking: approximately #15–18. Orly notably closed completely from April to June 2020 during COVID — the only major European airport to close entirely. It was the first to reopen after CDG remained operational throughout. Aircraft movements: approximately 200,000–210,000/year (2024). Cargo: minimal (~15,000 tonnes/year) — Orly is purely passenger-focused. Busiest routes: domestic France (Toulouse, Nice, Marseille, Bordeaux) and North Africa (Algeria, Morocco) consistently dominate traffic.

Pro Tips for Paris Orly Airport
- Paul boulangerie (multiple locations throughout the terminal) is the best breakfast option at Orly — authentic French pastries, excellent filter coffee, and sandwiches at reasonable airport prices (croissant ~€2.50, café au lait ~€3.50). It opens early (from ~05:30) in sync with the first departures.
- The duty-free in Hall 1 (international departures) has the best selection of French luxury goods — Chanel, Guerlain, Dior perfumes and cosmetics are priced competitively, especially for non-EU travellers eligible for the détaxe (VAT refund). Bring your passport and boarding pass to claim it at the dedicated desk.
- The Aspire Lounge in Hall 3 (airside) is often quieter than expected for a Paris airport lounge — most Transavia passengers don't have lounge access, so if you hold Priority Pass, capacity is generally comfortable. Arrive before the 07:00–09:00 morning wave for the best breakfast selection.
- For the Paris–Toulouse or Paris–Nice shuttle: these routes operate like buses — turn up, check in, board. Air France uses these domestic routes as shuttle services with departures every 30–60 minutes at peak times. Online check-in is recommended but walk-up tickets are available at the Air France desk.
- Use Metro Line 14 (open since June 2024) rather than OrlyVal for connections to central Paris — it's faster, cheaper, and goes directly to key stations (Gare de Lyon, Châtelet, Saint-Lazare) without changing. Buy a carnet of 10 tickets or load a Navigo Easy card for the cheapest per-trip fare.
- For flights to French overseas territories (Martinique, Guadeloupe, Réunion), book well in advance — these routes fill up completely during school holidays (February, April, July–August, and Christmas). Air France, Corsair, and Air Caraïbes all compete on these routes; comparing all three often reveals significant fare differences.
- Paris taxi fares to/from Orly are legally fixed: €30 to the Left Bank (south Paris), €35 to the Right Bank. If a taxi driver tries to charge more, you are entitled to refuse. Show the driver the official tariff list on your phone if needed (it's posted at the taxi rank).
- Check whether your flight is from Hall 1/2 (south, nearer to the Hilton hotel connection) or Hall 3/4 (north). The new terminal is connected but is large — allow 10 extra minutes to walk between halls vs arriving at the wrong end.
- Booking a tight connection through Orly expecting easy inter-terminal movement. Before April 2024 this was particularly problematic (separate Orly-Sud and Orly-Ouest buildings). Even in the new unified terminal, if your arriving and departing flights are in different halls and you need to reclear security, allow minimum 45–60 minutes.
- Using the OrlyVal assuming it's still the only metro connection. Since June 2024, Metro Line 14 offers a faster, cheaper, and more centrally connected option for most Paris destinations. OrlyVal remains useful for passengers specifically heading to the Latin Quarter via RER B or connecting to CDG.
- Overlooking Orly for flights that are typically booked at CDG. For North African destinations (Algiers, Casablanca, Tunis, Oran), Orly often has significantly more frequency and competitive pricing vs CDG — always search both airports when booking to/from Paris.
